Rockford Memorial Hospital Named Baby Friendly

BabyFriendlyRockford Memorial Hospital completed a nearly three-year journey to earn the prestigious Baby Friendly Designation this May. The hospital is one of only six in Illinois to receive this honor and one of 267 birthing centers nationwide.

The designation certifies the hospital has implemented ten steps to help mothers of newborns successfully breastfeed. These steps include providing education to staff and providers, educating pregnant mothers of the benefits of breastfeeding, starting early skin-to-skin and breastfeeding within one hour of birth, teaching feeding cues and educating on how to initiate and maintain breastfeeding, even if separated. The process changed the way new moms and babies are cared for and allows for providing an optimum level of care and support for infant feeding and mother/baby bonding.

“It’s not just about the designation. It is the right thing to do for families because it is what is best for moms and babies,” said Director of Women & Children’s Services Linnette Carter. Watch this video to learn more about what this means for moms and babies cared for at RMH.

Rockford Health System and ALS Association Greater Chicago Chapter Partner to Transform ALS Patient Health Care

A partnership between the ALS Association Greater Chicago Chapter and Rockford Health System will change the way local Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) patients receive health care. Together, the two organizations have created a monthly ALS clinic right here in our community. This is the first ALS clinic of its kind in the Rockford area.

There is good evidence that people with ALS who receive treatment at an ALS multidisciplinary clinic get the best possible care for their condition, live longer and have a higher quality of life. The ALS Multi-Disciplinary Clinic model provides a central location bringing together all the necessary medical providers all in one day. The team works to provide comprehensive care and education tailored to the individualized needs of each patient. Under the direction of Neurologist Shawn Wallery, M.D., the clinic takes place the first Friday of every month at Rockford Health System’s Brain and Spine Center.
